An eventful day of sea voyage on the Sognefjord by express boat, fjord cruise on the Fjærlandsfjord and a visit to the Bøya glacier, a branch of Norway's largest glacier, Jostedalsbreen. Experience coastal and fjord landscapes and glacier on the same day.
Your journey starts in Bergen, and you can enjoy the wonderful coastal landscape among islands, islets and rocks, as well as the world-famous long stretch of Sognefjorden on your way to Balestrand.
The King of the fjords, Sognefjorden, is the worlds longest and deepest ice free fjord, extends more than 200 km (124 miles) inland to the foot of the Jotunheimen mountains and is up to 1300 meters (3900 ft) deep. This area is said to be one of the most beautiful travel destinations in the world. The Sognefjord is enveloped with exceptional natural beauty, tall mountains, waterfalls and scenic forests.
On your arrival at Balestrand – a village that is a favourite among artists – you change to a smaller sightseeing boat that takes you further into the idyllic Fjærlandsfjorden to Fjærland. From here the trip continues by bus to the Norwegian Glacier Museum where you can learn about the history and the “inner life” of the glacier. A spectacular film by Ivo Caprino about Jostedalsbreen glacier is shown at the museum.
From the Norwegian Glacier Museum the tour continues up to Bøyabreen glacier – a branch of Jostedalsbreen glacier. Here there’s time to take a few photos and to see how the glacier presses itself into the landscape. The bus returns to Fjærland quay, and the sightseeing boat takes you back to Balestrand. The trip back gives you the chance to reflect on the fact that these fjords were shaped several thousand years ago by ice.
Upon arrival at Balestrand the express boat will take us back to Bergen.
This tour includes a cruise by express boat on the Sognefjord, a fjord cruise on the Fjærlandsfjord and a bus trip to the Bøya glacier. Along the way, you will be informed of places and history by our local guide who will be your traveling companion throughout the tour.
Meet your guide 7.30 am at the Express Boat Terminal in Bergen centrum, a short walk from most hotels.
